Background
History of Establishment
Majlis Daerah Hulu Terengganu (MDHT) was established on 1 January 1981 under Section 3 of the Local Government Act 1976 (Act 171, amended 1978). Previously, it operated as the Ulu Terengganu Town Board. The official launch ceremony took place on 30 August 1982 at Dewan Bandaran Kuala Brang, officiated by the Terengganu Chief Minister.
Administrative Area
The council initially operated across 53.40 square kilometres. Following a re-gazette on 18 July 1996, the administrative area was expanded to encompass the entire Hulu Terengganu district at 3,821.23 square kilometres, covering seven mukims: Kuala Berang, Tanggol, Tersat, Penghulu Diman, Jenagor, Hulu Telemong and Hulu Berang.
Population
Population growth has been substantial — from 3,586 residents in 1970 to 74,918 by the 2000 census. The council is located approximately 40 kilometres from central Kuala Terengganu.
